1985 KDX200 magneto and cylinder

Post by 85' kid »

Hi all, I have a 1985KDX200. Recently the crank seals went out on it, so I thought I might not need to split the case. So one crank seal is on the magneto side, so I pulled the magneto off and a magnet was broken in half. That was narly I had never seen that before, it was obviously my fault but I was surprised to see exposed magnets with nothing around it. Now I have been looking around for a 85' magneto, but cant find one. But I have bee able to find some 90's KDX200 magnetos. Would that work? if so could I use the same stator? Also the top end is crispy, there is scarring AND pitting. So I was looking for places to do it and no one would do it because of the nikasil coding, I guess California doesn't allow or something. So any suggestions and answer's would be great. Thanks

Welcome to kdxrider.net.

PowerSeal USA or Millenium Technologies to replate the cylinder. Wossner piston and rings have been suggested by some as a safe OEM replacement.

Ok thankyou. I saw that you provided a website for the magnets, but could I just buy a 90's magneto ?

I am not sure. You might want to call Jeff Fredette and ask him if he sells a solution. frpoffroad.com

I know that with a modified stator plate, one can run a 1995 + KDX stator on a 1986 - 1988, but I don't know about the 1985 and earlier. That's before my time for big bikes. I was on a 1985 KDX80 at the time. :-)

Yea I think the only difference from the 85 to the 86 was the powervalve, engine wise. When you say modified are you talking trimming the stator or also buying a 90's stator?

There are several more differences between the 183 - 1985 engines and 1986 - 1988 engines. Search on here for a few threads where other people have done it, then shown pictures and their story on how it went.
