Looking for a 1987 KDX200 stator assembly

Post by Jay Dawg »

I wanted to start a new thread to see if anyone may have an original complete stator assembly for a 1987 Kawasaki KDX200 to sell. This bike has been a major headache since I damaged the original stator (totally my fault). The bike ran good prior and is in excellent condition for its age. I bought a new ignition coil and the bike ran backwards. I then sent the original coil back to RMStator and they rewound it. I put it on and was getting no fire, so I bought a used CDI from Ebay and put it on. Now the bike is running but still running backwards!! At this point I think I need to just try and find an original stator assembly and go from there. Anybody got one to sell let me know. Or if anyone has any other advice on how to fix this it would be much appreciated. I think the previous owner had put a different stator in it from a different year bike because all the info I find shows the ignition coil setup having 2 ignition coils and mine only has one coil.

Thanks, Jay

Sounds like a missing flywheel/woodruff key. Did you install with the new stators?

The flywheel key is intact. The magnets are all secure.

Here is a close up picture of the stator assembly. Notice the flywheel key is intact and the top coil (ignition) is a single coil and not a dual piggyback coil. All pics for a 1987 I have found show the 2 coil system so I assume someone changed the original stator at some point. Or Kawasaki used 2 different setups for the same year model to use up excess inventory.

I actually took Jaguars advice from a previous thread and rotated the stator plate as far counter clockwise as it would go and it still ran backwards. As you can see from the picture, there is very little adjustment in the slot of the stator plate. I guess my best bet is to try to find an original stator and try that.

That top part doesn't look factory.

Yes, in stock form it is two stacked on top of each other. (as best I remember)

The top coil is the one that was on the bike when I bought it. I sent it to RMStator and they rewound it supposedly to factory specs. It ohms out at 262 ohms. While kicking the bike with a meter on the output wire going into the CDI it reads 38 volts. It is getting a nice blue spark, but at the wrong time. I guess I will try to advance or retard the timing and see if that works. I will buy an original stator assembly if I can find one. The parts for these older bikes are getting scarce.

Hi Jay

the first pic is out of a workshop manual for your model 200, Air cooled power valve engine.

Image

This pick is of a 200 air-cooled '83-'85 era l have on the shelf which would probably be an Australian part.

Image

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Do you want to sell the stator in the second picture? It looks like the one in your picture above it. I would be willing to try it if you want to sell it. The windings on the top lighting coil appear to be damaged on the right side though. I could rewind the lighting coil. Let me know.

Thanks, Jay

Jay,

How come in the manual and on the picture above, the lighting coil is on the top and yours is on the bottom?
You don't have them inverted do you?
I have one at home that I will take a look at when I get home tonight.

Mine had a magnet tear it up a bit so I went with the H-series adaptation.

It actually ran fine with this configuration before I damaged the coil. I could certainly swap them around. At this point I've got nothing to lose. You are right, they are all different from mine and maybe the ignition coil needs to be on the bottom.

Jay

(What exactly is a H-series adaption????)

It appears that you have two lighting coils mounted up on your stator. There should be 5 wires coming out of the flywheel side of the motor tot he rest of the harness. I have heard some talk about using a Tecate 3 stator, but can't confirm that.

Here is a picture of mine from an 87.
The extra slots are in preparation to use an H-series flywheel.

It appears that your ignition coil is on top as well. I guess my next step in this process is to advance and retard the timing as far as it will go and try it at each setting to see if it will run and then swap the lighting coil position with the ignition coil and see if that helps. Thanks for the information.
