Splitting air cooled cases.

Post by GKBO »

In the case splitting thread for the water cooled bikes a big deal is made about not using the coil mounts to split the cases.Looking though my Clymer manual I found this http://books.google.ca/books?id=x_qLnBH ... CFUQ6AEwBA .Seems the factory splitter uses the coil mounts to split the cases.I don't know if splitting the cases with only 2 screws is a good idea,or am I just being paranoid?

The cases are made different between the air cooled and the water cooled. From the looks of the picture the air cooled has two larger bolt holes to pull from as the water cooled has three small holes that wouldn't hold up well to pulling.

Yes they are, more than I'd thought obviously.I've been in a few 4 stroke engines but I'm pretty much a noob to the nuts and bolts of a 2 stroke. Those screws on the AC coil plate are 6mm(I just checked).I think I'm going to make up a plate to use with my harmonic puller and use the 5 flywheel cover bolt holes instead.I just feel like that's a safer way to go.

I used the two mentioned in the 87 manual when I did one.

Went good then I take it Jason.Would be way easier to use the harmonic puller than to mess with other stuff.Give it a try on the weekend.

Decided to give this a try.Put heat andpenetrating oil on the bearing to help ease it out.

Worked great! Yes I might have found a slight problem
