Hi everyone,
I have a 1992 KDX200 and I need to replace the dust and oil seals. It has standard, non-inverted shocks. I have a shop manual that shows that this can be done without completely disassembling the shock. I have been able to remove the snap ring and dust seal, but the oil seal isn't coming out. I've tried heating, dental picks, swearing, etcetera, but no joy. I'm wondering if I should fully disassemble the shock, or if there's another approach to getting the oil seal out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Do you mean the forks? You need to fully disassemble them to replace the seals.

Normally, they are disassembled. You can put some small wood screws in the old seal and use wire to pull it up and out, then install the new one. There are other home made techniques to doing it.

What you are not aware of is that the inner and outer fork tube bushings need to be inspected and probably replaced. This requires disassembly.

Here's a pic from a set of 1987 KDX200 forks that are similar to yours internally. The picture is from years ago when I used to work on them.
