Spring under the float valve?

Post by TwistedRoot »

On a stock PWK35 do you all know if there is a spring that sits under the float valve? It hung a little previously and I could measure it at 17mm, but after reassembly they flop around. Not sure if Im missing something or not. Floats have more play and bowl overflows. Did not see anything on the RM oem site and Im kicking myself for messing with it!

Manual states:

"When checking the float height turn the carburetor sideways with the float hanging from the pivot pin. Angle the carburetor back about 25° so the float is resting on the fuel valve but not compressing the spring inside of it. Measure the distance between the float bowl gasket surface and the highest part of the float with a set of vernier calipers or float height gauge."

The float needle has a plunger that is spring loaded. The spring can get tired so when you replace the float needle it holds the float up better. I had to replace my float needle to get the float level problems resolved.

Yes, the float pin (on the opposite end from the rubber tip) is spring loaded. Easy wear item to replace and they do wear out.

Can you point me to that part or does it come with the a new float?

Is it this thing? Its described as a "clamp" tho not spring.

Yeah that’s the clip that keeps the needle from falling out of the seat right?

Ok so its an internal spring. I wasnt sure if there was a separate part or not. This pic shows the "spring" loaded part. This is the original float valve, not the newer one that came with my kit. Sorry about the dumb questions.

Yes. It dampens the impact of the tang from when the floats hit the float arms. It’s all one part, technically.

Thanks kdxsully. That was kind of dumb on my part. I knew there was not an external spring. Idk what the heck I was thinking. Anyway I have my float set at 17.8mm and will get to testing out some different needles. I recently tried out a DEJ needle and all I can say is: wow.

Just FYI I set my float all over the place from 16mm to 18mm and settled on 16MM. I know a lot of riders experienced success with 18Mm.

If your carb aint broke!! LOL...Im still learning to live with my PWK. It can be frustrating at times. Im hoping I wont have to go the new carb route. So figured I would try the float adjustment, run it for a bit and if all is cool I will swap out the needle and begin tweaking again. Also, I couldn't help myself so I polished the valve seat while it was apart too. :tonqe:

I messed with mine for days. Needles, jets, etc. Now I'm happy enough to forget about adjusting it for a year or two.
